TelcoTV is only temporary

JC — September 28, 2005 - 11:58

I feel a little less on my own than yesterday as it looks like other people are thinking that real-time video delivery of broadcast content over an IP network (TelcoTV in short) is not the ultimate in video entertainment.

A major new strategic management report warns that broadband video services will eventually displace broadcast distribution, but telecommunications providers may not be the ultimate winners of the network television revolution.

[...] The report, IPTV: Broadband meets broadcast--The network television revolution, concludes:

  • Within a decade, video services delivered over broadband networks will be firmly established as an alternative platform to digital satellite, terrestrial and cable transmission.
  • The real competition will come not between operators of rival platforms, but between closed and open networks.
  • Television will become more like the web, as scheduled broadcast channels are displaced by a choice of millions of download and on-demand programs.
  • 'Telco TV' services will be challenged by an 'Open Source TV' distribution model, offering a much more diverse choice of free and pay programming over the open internet.

Nonetheless I continue to regret that initiatives like Prodigem and DTV are still too sparse and discrete to have an impact.

Oh and One more thing you

somebody (not verified) — September 11, 2006 - 10:28

Oh and One more thing you should know about the Livezoom that works with the Livebox. It's made by Axis. It's a good camera. But France Telecom / Wanadoo/Orange / What ever they want to call themselves this week, is supplying the model 206W. Go to the Axis web site. That camera is DISCONTINUED. It has been replaced by a 207W. Then try the following. Do a google search “axis 206W” . Phone France Telecom / Wanadoo / Orange . Then tell them this at customer suppport. Tell them you want the current model. This is really going to take a long time. And you are not going to get what you want. Because you are not valued as a customer. You have now become a problem. So all I can say. Is give this a go and we will see you at our support groups. Know you are not alone. The support group will be a 12 step program to assist you in withdrawing from technology and moving to a more relaxing life on a farm. Trust me. After a few weeks dealing with the Deadbox you are going to see the value in this.

France's Wanadoo / Orange

Carl (not verified) — September 11, 2006 - 10:07

France's Wanadoo / Orange Livebox shoud be renamed Wanadon't Deadbox. Setting this up was a real nightmare. And that was with the France telecom “I never seen one of these before” Installer. The internet is connected finally. The TV connection is a total Con. It DOES NOT WORK. It drops out. If you try their pay per view movie service it bills you and then stops the movie half way through. Due to service difficulties they are sorry and you are angry. Now if you really want to end up in a nut house then buy one of the Livezoom cameras. Tell the sales person you have a Mac. They'll say. “No problem , it works on a Mac.” Then go home. Wait for the installer. The price includes installation. Then when he arrives he tells you he has never installed on a Mac and this is the first livezoom camera he has seen. Now you just know the day is not going to go well. So he goes away failing to satisfy you. You start ringing France telecom's “Customer Support.” Now this is where you will really be tested. Depending upon who you get on the phone (if you get someone) you'll be told it does, it does not, it does, it does not .......work on a Mac. So here's my solution. We need to start up a support group. Bit like Alcoholics Annonymous. But it for Livebox users. We can meet every week. Have coffee and talk through our experiences. Know we are not alone. Support each other. Be there for each other when we start to lose it. It's going to be a lot better than you will get from any Livebox reseller.
